What is Panchang, and for which purpose is it used?

Panchang means “Paanch Ang” or five limbs. It is a sort of almanac designed and prepared daily as per Vedic Astrology. It could be described as an astrological diary that records useful astrological insights about shubh muhurat and occasions. Daily Panchang is a daily updated almanac that tells you the Nakshatras and Yogas for that particular day as per your date of birth. Besides, the yearly Panchang tells you what the coming year, month or week has in store for you. The Panchang is often consulted for selecting an auspicious time to carry out major life decisions regarding education, marriage, travel, new business, interview, examination, etc.

Whether you are looking for Today Nakshatra or Yoga regarding an upcoming interview, Panchang gives you answers after due consultation of the position of planets, both in the context of current as well as future placements. Using this ancient method, astrologers and pundits synchronize your actions with auspicious or favorable moments in time to avoid any negative fallouts. Panchang is a highly helpful assistive tool that allows you to check the nature and quality of any particular day or occasion in advance.

Panch-Ang of Panchang

Panchang comprises five limbs/arms/components and arrives at the right Daily Panchang or Today Nakshatra or Yoga for the person. It is necessary to understand the five components of Panchang, in the words of Dr. Vinay Bajrangi, one of the most astute astrologers in the country. He says -

The Panchang is made up of five parts, which are -

1. Din (also called Vaar or Day of the week): These are

Sunday (Sun)

Monday (Moon)

Tuesday (Mars)

Wednesday (Mercury)

Thursday (Jupiter)

Friday (Venus)

Saturday (Saturn)

2. Tithi (Lunar calendar day): There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month, divided into two phases or Pakshas, depending upon the waxing or waning Moon. As per the Vedic Astrology, Tithis are of five types -

  • Nanda Tithi – ensures happiness in life

  • Bhadra Tithi – right date to start a new job

  • Jaya Tithi - auspicious for conquering enemies

  • Rikta Tithi - should be avoided if there is an important work to do

  • Poorna Tithi – ensures all your work is completed

3. Nakshatra:

Nakshatra means that which doesn’t decay. In astrology, it means stellar constellations. Vedic Astrology speaks of 27 Nakshatras, with each one occupying 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the zodiac. The sequence of these 27 Nakshatras begins with Ashwini Nakshatra in the Mesha Rashi.

4. Yoga: Yoga is the sum of Nirayna longitude of the Moon and the Sun divided into 27 parts, each measuring 13 degrees 20 inches.

5. Karna: Karna is half of Tithi, and there are two Karnas in each Tithi. There are 11 Karnas, and these are classified into two types – fixed and movable. Four Karnas are of fixed variety, and they occur once a month. They are – Kintughna, Sakuni, Chatushpada, and Naga. The rest of the Karnas, 7, are movable, but these appear in a fixed rotation – Bava, Baklava, Taitila, Kaulava, Vanija, Gara, and Vrishti.
